Sandra Prosnitz

“One of the best things about working with Lighthouse Guild is meeting so many interesting people I would never have otherwise met. Getting to know people from different cultures, with diverse talents and experiences, makes volunteering endlessly fascinating and rewarding,” says Sandra Prosnitz, who has been a Lighthouse Guild volunteer for over three years.

Sandra currently is a reader working with a native of Afghanistan who is preparing to receive her second Master’s degree in Social Work. This involves reading background materials required for her client’s studies, typing papers, and helping to explain some English terms. “Spending time with my client is inspirational. She not only has a distinguished academic career but also directs a nonprofit for people who are visually impaired. Somehow, she also has found time to run marathons and earn a green belt in judo. It’s been so interesting learning about her vocation and avocations, as well as her life growing up in Afghanistan.”

In addition to an earlier stint reading news articles and mail for another Reading Services client, Sandra has also supported the Music School as a sighted guide. “Here, too, I’ve been able to interact with people who are not only talented musicians but who excel at running, swimming, and other pursuits. And it’s a special pleasure to listen to the music the students perform at concerts held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters.”

Sandra is glad that she can now work in her client’s home following months of remote volunteering during the worst of the COVID pandemic.
