You may feel like your vision loss or blindness will make your adjustment to an independent life difficult. But teenagers all over the country have gone through that same adjustment successfully, and we can help you connect with them. You will have the opportunity to talk about common social, emotional, academic and practical concerns related to having vision loss.

Groups are led by Daria Zawadzki, JD, LMSW, a licensed social worker. Groups meet twice a month on the phone (toll-free). Groups are small and everyone has the opportunity to take part. Guest speakers share knowledge and experiences.

I liked how the calls were laid back and relaxed. I would definitely recommend that all blind and visually impaired high school students join these calls—you will enjoy them!

Getting ready for college? Help is just a call away

Teen Group for Juniors and Seniors

We have a free telephone support group for high school juniors and seniors who are blind and visually impaired

If you’re a high school junior or senior with vision loss and are preparing to go to college, it’s normal to feel anxious about the transition. What will your new life be like? Will you make new friends easily? How can you learn to get around campus? We have a free Tele-Support group to connect you with other students who have gone through that same adjustment successfully. Each week, you can call in to share experiences and ask questions of college students and recent graduates who also have vision loss. They know what you’re going through, and they’re ready to help.

Talk with other teens who are visually impaired about common social, emotional, academic and practical concerns connected with high school and college and having a vision impairment. Some of the subjects we discuss include:

  • Driving/mobility
  • Traveling at night
  • Dating/social life
  • Preparing for college
  • Career goals
  • Assistive technology

Meetings are every other Monday, 7:30 pm EDT

The Teen Groups will be on a break for the summer and will resume in September. If you’re interested in joining the group in September, please fill out an enrollment form, and the facilitator will contact you with more information.
