Medical and Vision Services

Volunteers offer essential support to patients in our clinic, which provides medical services for people with vision loss, chronic illnesses, and other disabilities. Typical volunteer duties involve administrative support and general assistance to administrative staff, such as filing, faxing, answering phones, obtaining authorizations, verifying insurance eligibility, scheduling appointments, and assisting new patients.
Commitment: Multiple days/week
Time: Weekdays

Creative Services

Volunteer writers, graphic designers, and photographers lend their skills in various ways. Graphic designers proficient in desktop publishing programs assist on special projects. Skilled photographers help us document Lighthouse Guild programs, services, and special events. Writers pitch in by developing or editing content for various Lighthouse Guild communications.
Commitment: Occasionally
Time: Weekdays, evenings, weekends

Internships

Student interns support staff in Lighthouse Guild departments and learn to master technical, administrative, communication, and project management skills specific to the needs of their assigned department. Internships are unpaid and available to college and graduate students.
Commitment: Multiple days/week
Time: Weekdays

Office Assistant

Office volunteers provide administrative support on projects, programs, and services. Tasks include clerical, reception, computer work, and project coordination. Familiarity with Microsoft Office is generally required.
Commitment: Weekly, occasionally

Reading Services

Volunteers read to adults who are blind or visually impaired. Reading materials cover a wide range of
topics and support the client’s academic, employment, leisure, or personal reading needs. Clients provide their own reading materials and sessions last for two hours. Volunteers must be able to speak clearly and read at a college level.
Commitment: Weekly, on-call
Time: Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays

Special Events

For special events, volunteers assist with guest registration, product or information distribution,
hospitality, and staffing. During the event, volunteers may act as guides and help to ensure the event runs smoothly. Events include, but are not limited to, seminars and guest lectures.
Commitment: Occasionally
Time: Weekdays, evenings

Youth Programs

Volunteers assist instructors in recreational, educational, and social programs for young people, ages 7-18, who are visually impaired. For this role, volunteers must have two letters of reference and previous experience interacting with youth.
