Daniel Callahan’s tireless dedication and visionary leadership at the Lavelle Fund for the Blind, Lighthouse Guild and the New York State Commission for the Blind have left an indelible mark on the mission of these agencies and the lives of many (especially children) who are visually impaired. As Lighthouse Guild’s Director of the Children’s Vision Health Initiative, Dan developed and led our Tele-Support for Parents program, the foundation for our Remote Care Network. Because of this program, throughout the world people living with vision impairment, and their families, have access to information, training and support not otherwise available.
In honor of Dan’s extraordinary contributions, Lighthouse Guild has established the Daniel M. Callahan Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded annually to individuals who are blind or visually impaired to help them pursue their higher education goals. It is our hope that this scholarship will continue Dan’s legacy of enabling young people with vision loss, supporting them as they work to achieve academic success and lead the lives they aspire to.
