Hello, my name is Lisha Gonzalez. I’m from the Tech Pals program at Lighthouse Guild. Today, I’ll be using the Seeing AI app and demonstrating the Document Channel. The Document Channel allows you to read printed text by taking a picture. Let’s do a demo.

How to Use the Document Channel

In order to use the Document Channel, what you want to do first is access the Seeing AI app. Once you’re there, if you’re using VoiceOver, you can swipe up or down with one finger and find the Document Channel that way. If you’re able to access the screen, what you will want to look for is a piece of paper with two lines across it.

I currently have a piece of paper in front of me—an electricity bill—and I’m going to use it to demonstrate how to scan with the Document Channel. So, if I lift up my phone, I will get some instructions from the app. Then it automatically will scan the document or the bill for me. The sound you just heard signifies that the document has been scanned, and now we can access it.

Again, if you’re using VoiceOver, you can swipe to the right with one finger to read the text. Listen.

[Text begins reading aloud:]
“National Grid road service for James Smith, 25 Broadway, Apt 16, SKC NY 12305, Billing Period March 31st, 2014 to May 5th, 2014.”

We also have a play button in the bottom left of the screen that can help you if you’re able to access the screen. So, if you click that play button, you will hear the text read out loud. You can click it again to pause it.

That is how you scan a document in Seeing AI. The Document Channel is great because it not only allows you to scan mail, but you can also scan bills and even restaurant menus if you’re outside, which is really helpful. You don’t have to worry about your document possibly being upside down because it will recognize and scan the text either way.

You can save, share your document, and even add pages if your document has multiple pages.

We hope this tutorial assists you in using Seeing AI. Be sure to check out the other tutorials in this series.
