Just because your sunglasses lenses are tinted, doesn’t mean your eyes are safe from UV rays.

In fact, you’re probably causing more damage to your eyes when wearing tinted sunglasses that don’t have a protective UV coating instead of not wearing sunglasses at all, according to Dr. Andrea Zimmerman, a low vision specialist at Lighthouse Guild in New York City. The reason: your pupils open wider when shaded by darker lenses, so UV light is able to go straight through the unprotected lenses right into your open pupils.
