The Power of Generative Artificial Intelligence for People with Vision Loss Is Topic of Latest Episode of “On Tech and Vision”

February 29, 2024

NEW YORK (February 22, 2024) — When it comes to emerging technology, there’s no hotter topic than artificial intelligence. People are exploring the possibilities of what AI can achieve – including accessible technologies for people who are blind or visually impaired.

One of those people is Saqib Shaikh, an engineering manager at Microsoft. Saqib leads a team that developed an app called Seeing AI, which utilizes the latest generation of artificial intelligence, known as generative AI. In this new episode of “On Tech and Vision,” he speaks about how generative AI works, his firsthand experience using an app like Seeing AI, and how it helped improve his daily life.

Seeing AI can perform essential tasks like reading a prescription or the sign at a bus stop. It can also enhance fun experiences by describing all the colorful details of sea life in a fish tank at an aquarium or helping order dinner off a menu.

This episode of the popular podcast also features Alice Massa, an occupational therapist at Lighthouse Guild. Alice describes the benefits of generative AI, and how it helps her clients better engage in their world.

“Technology can literally put the world in the palm of your hand,” says Dr. Calvin W. Roberts, president and CEO of Lighthouse Guild and podcast host. “Generative AI is a powerful new technology that is revolutionizing how people who are blind or visually impaired interact with their environment.”

Now in its fourth season, “On Tech & Vision,” has over 15,000 downloads since it launched in 2020 and is a recipient of a 2023 Anthem Award. The podcast is available online at Lighthouseguild.org and for downloading on Apple Music, Spotify, Google Podcasts iHeartRadio Podcasts and Tunein.com. Twitter: @LighthouseGld #OnTechVision.
