Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being: Social Workers Offer Tips for People with Vision Loss
March 13, 2025
March is National Social Work Month
NEW YORK (March 3, 2025) – Social workers play a crucial role in helping individuals with vision loss navigate life’s challenges. From ensuring access to medical care and essential resources to providing emotional support, social workers offer invaluable guidance that enhances well-being and independence.
“When someone is diagnosed with vision loss, the initial impact can be overwhelming,” says Jocelyn Tapia, LCSW-R, Clinical Social Worker at Lighthouse Guild. “Social workers help by coordinating care, connecting individuals with resources, and providing a compassionate ear. We are trained to assess biological, psychological, and social factors, as well as diagnose mental health conditions.”
To promote mental health and self-care, Lighthouse Guild social workers share five key tips for individuals with vision loss:
- Stay Informed – Knowledge is empowering. Schedule an evaluation with an eye specialist to understand your specific condition and potential treatment options. Additionally, learning about stress management and available support resources can be instrumental in maintaining overall well-being.
- Consult a Low Vision Specialist – Low vision services can help maximize remaining vision. A specialist can recommend visual aids, adaptive devices, and mobility training to enhance independence and daily function.
- Engage Loved Ones – Keeping family and friends informed about your eye condition allows them to offer support. Loved ones can accompany you to medical appointments and help make adjustments in your home to improve safety and accessibility.
- Seek Mental Health Support – Adjusting to vision loss can trigger feelings of anxiety or depression. Counseling provides a safe space to process emotions, grieve changes in independence, and develop coping strategies for a fulfilling life.
- Join a Support Group – Connecting with others who have experienced vision loss fosters a sense of community and reduces isolation. Support groups can provide encouragement, shared experiences, and lasting friendships.
