NEW YORK (February 21, 2025) – Historically, technology designed for people with low vision has been bespoke, specialized and costly. However, a paradigm shift is emerging – one that leverages existing mainstream technology to create accessible solutions for individuals with vision loss.

The latest episode of On Tech & Vision with Dr. Cal Roberts explores the shift from creating new vision technology from the ground up to building on existing technologies that many people use in their daily lives. The episode includes insightful conversations with innovators who are reshaping accessibility.

Dr. Cal Roberts, President and CEO of Lighthouse Guild, talks with Karthik Mahadevan, founder and CEO of Envision, a company that enhances everyday technology, such as smartphones and smart glasses, with AI-driven software that recognizes key visual cues and conveys them through computer-generated speech.

Also joining the conversation is Troy Otillio, CEO of Aira, a platform that connects users with live visual interpreters who assist with everyday tasks, from reading mail to navigating unfamiliar environments. The episode highlights Aira’s partnership with Envision, integrating human visual interpretation with Envision’s technology to provide deeper contextual support for users.

Now in its fifth season, On Tech & Vision with Dr. Cal Roberts continues to explore big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Since its 2020 debut, the podcast has amassed over 18,000 downloads and was honored with a 2023 Anthem Award.
