Leveraging Your Strengths and Skills in the Job Search

Lighthouse Guild Offers Job Hunting Tips for People with Disabilities

NEW YORK (October 17, 2024) – October is National Disability Employment Awareness month, a great time to refresh job-hunting skills whether you are looking for a job or hoping to make a switch to a new job. For people with disabilities, job hunting can be daunting. By leveraging your strengths, utilizing available resources and maintaining a positive outlook, you can navigate the process effectively. Remember, the right job is out there for you!

“Opportunities don’t happen. You create them.” says Marcia Shaw, Manager of Placement at Lighthouse Guild. “Job searching can take time, so focus on your progress and stay motivated. Use any setbacks as learning opportunities to refine your approach.”

There are a few tips to help with the job hunt:

  • Utilize online platforms. Virtual networking is a great option. Platforms like  LinkedIn can help you connect without the barriers that in-person events may present. Make sure LinkedIn profiles are current. An excellent way to use LinkedIn is to write recommendations for connections. Thoughtfully written recommendations will strengthen a profile.
  • Leverage Assistive Technology. Use tools and apps that can help you communicate effectively, whether it’s speech-to-text software, screen readers, or other assistive devices. Familiarize yourself with job search websites that are user friendly. Reach out to organizations that offer job placement services and resources for individuals with disabilities.
  • Focus on your strengths. Tailor your resume and cover letter for each job application to reflect the specific skills and experiences that align with the job description.
  • Practice Your Pitch. Prepare a brief introduction about yourself, your skills, and what you’re looking for. With practice, it may help you feel more confident when meeting new people.
  • Get comfortable with the camera. Virtual job interviews can be very common.  So, it’s important to become proficient with video platforms like Zoom. Learn how to place the camera correctly. Set up the proper lighting. When that Zoom interview comes along, it’s important to convey strength, professionalism, and showcase your skills.
  • Volunteer. Gaining experience through volunteer work or internships can build your resume and network while showcasing your abilities.
  • Schedule informational interviews. An informational interview is a conversation with someone in a role or industry of interest. These can often be the springboard into other conversations, including job interviews. Take advantage of industry specific groups that can help you connect without the barriers that in-person events may present.
  • Networking. Reach out to friends, family and professional contacts. Let them know what you are looking for. Networking can lead to opportunities and provide support as well.
  • Follow up. After meeting someone, send them a message to thank them for their time and to express your interest in staying in touch. This can help solidify your connection.
