Goalball
Blindness is not an obstacle to overcome — it is the foundation on which this game is built.
Goalball is one of the world’s premier Paralympic team sports — and at Lighthouse Guild, it is one of the most powerful expressions of what our community is capable of. Fast-paced, intensely physical, and built entirely around sound and trust, goalball gives players who are blind or have low vision a fully equalized competitive arena where skill, strategy, and teamwork determine everything.

What Is Goalball?
Goalball was developed in 1946 to support the rehabilitation of veterans who had lost their vision during World War II. It became an official Paralympic sport in 1976 and is now played in more than 100 countries. It is one of the few sports in the world designed specifically — and exclusively — for athletes with visual impairment.
HOW IT WORKS
- Two teams of three players face each other across a court divided by a center line
- All players wear eyeshades regardless of their level of vision loss, creating a fully equalized playing field
- Players take turns hurling a ball — embedded with bells — toward the opposing team’s goal
- The defending team listens for the sound of the ball and dives to block it with their body
- The team that scores the most goals in two 12-minute halves wins
The sport demands acute auditory perception, explosive athleticism, and deep communication between teammates — making it as mentally demanding as it is physical.
Goalball at Lighthouse Guild
Lighthouse Guild has offered goalball clinics for youth who are blind or have low vision — giving young people access to a sport that was built for them. Our goalball clinics build athletic skill alongside confidence, communication, and the deep sense of belonging that comes from competing as part of a team.
Participants develop at their own pace in a supportive, coached environment. Whether a young person has never played a sport before or is simply looking for a new challenge, goalball is an accessible and exciting place to start.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
- Youth and teens who are blind or have low vision
- No prior sports experience required
- Open to Lighthouse Guild clients and the broader community
Why It Matters
For many young people navigating vision loss, sport can feel like something that belongs to a world they’ve been excluded from. Goalball changes that entirely. It is a sport where blindness is not an obstacle to overcome — it is the shared foundation on which the entire game is built.
The impact extends well beyond the court. Participants build physical confidence, develop trust in their own senses, and form connections with peers who understand their experience. For many players, goalball is the first time they have competed — and won — on a completely level playing field.
At Lighthouse Guild, that experience is inseparable from our broader mission: to walk alongside people through every stage of their journey with vision loss, and to make sure that journey includes community, joy, and the freedom to discover what they are truly capable of.
