Does My Child Have a Vision Problem?

Does your child mention having headaches or difficulty seeing the board? Do they avoid reading or have a short attention span during visual tasks? These may be indications that your child has a vision problem. Healthy vision is crucial for a child’s learning ability and is one of the keys to success in school. When children struggle to see the board or the computer screen, it can affect their attention, comprehension, and ability to follow instructions in the classroom. This can lead to frustration, a lack of interest in learning, and a decline in academic performance. If you suspect your child has a vision problem, make sure they get an eye exam as soon as possible.  

“The most important step in safeguarding your child’s vision is to schedule a comprehensive eye exam. It’s the key to identifying and treating vision problems early,” says Dr. Laura Sperazza, Director of Vision Rehabilitation Services at Lighthouse Guild. “An eye health professional can determine if your child needs eyeglasses or contact lenses, or if there is a vision problem that requires further intervention.”

Signs your child may need to see a vision specialist include:

• Squinting
• Rubbing their eyes
• Avoids reading
• Tilting their head
• Sitting too close to the tv or holding their cell phone too close to their face
• Covers one eye when reading
• Headaches and dizziness
• Short attention span or behavioral issues
• Losing their place when reading
• Poor hand-eye coordination
• Misaligned eyes
