Dental Care

Your oral health is important
Good oral health is important for everyone. Healthy teeth, healthy gums and a healthy mouth contribute to your overall wellbeing.

Problems with your teeth can affect how and what you eat. Poor dental health can also lead to pneumonia and heart disease. Gum disease and oral cancer, if found and treated early, need not become a major problem.

Teeth are important
The loss of teeth, untreated dental cavities and gum disease can affect important functions such as talking, eating and swallowing.

To support good oral health

  • Visit your dentist on a routine basis as check-ups can detect early signs of oral health problems.
  • Take care of your teeth and gums.
  • Drink fluoridated water and use a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Fluoride provides protection against tooth decay.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol as they increase the risk for gum disease and oral cancers.
  • Eat a mount-healthy diet. Limit sugary foods and liquids in your diet and eat foods high in whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

Take care of your teeth and gums:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily.
  • Replace your toothbrush when the bristles are worn.
  • Floss between your teeth every day – it not only removes food but gives gums a massage.
  • If you wear dentures, clean them every day.

Dental problems may be present if your:

  • Gums are painful, reddened or bleeding;
  • Teeth are painful, broken or chipped;
  • Mouth has white or red patchy spots;
  • Dentures do not fit properly, slide around or need a lot of adhesive.

  • If you wear dentures, make it a point to see a dentist on a routine basis to check your mouth (gums, tongue), and to make sure your dentures fit correctly.
  • If you are unable to perform these activities on your own, your caregiver should help you with daily oral hygiene routines.
